The ‘Eyes’ Have It On New Sam Smith LP

Sam Smith is leaning into romance on their newly announced fifth album. The Grammy-, Oscar-, BRIT- and Golden Globe-winning artist will release Hazel Eyes on Aug. 21 via Capitol Records, marking their first full-length project since 2023’s Gloria.
Alongside the announcement, Smith has shared the album’s lead single, “My Guy,” a buoyant celebration of fully requited love that arrives with an accompanying video. Co-written by Smith with Feist and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, the track features harmonies from Feist and singer/songwriter Moses Sumney, adding a playful, girl-group-inspired flourish to its lovestruck sentiment.

“This is a song that I feel I have been waiting a lifetime to write and sing,” Smith says. “Written with beautiful friends on a summer’s day in New York, this one fell out of the sky. In this sometimes cold and distant world, I hope you can feel the love and the closeness of this recording.”
According to Smith, Hazel Eyes has been in the works for more than three years and represents one of their most personal artistic statements to date. “This album is an incredibly special record to me,” they reveal. “I have been writing it for over three years with a very small group of beautiful, dear friends of mine. This album is very personal, and I feel I have deepened myself as an artist through the making of it, through being a producer on the record, to walking alongside this record from the start to the finish and pushing myself at every single turn.”
Co-produced by Smith alongside Simon Aldred and David Odlum, the 12-song set was largely shaped in New York, where Smith now lives. The project draws on a close-knit group of collaborators, including Feist, Ismaily and string arranger Rob Moose, and was partially recorded at the famed Electric Lady Studios in the West Village.
Sonically, Hazel Eyes is said to blend baroque pop, British folk, outlaw country and left-field R&B while foregrounding Smith’s signature vocal performances and intimate songwriting. It also includes the previously released tracks “Love Is a Stillness” and “To Be Free.”
The announcement arrives as Smith prepares for a special performance Friday (June 26) at the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center in New York, kicking off Pride weekend at the first LGBTQ+ visitor center within the National Park Service. The appearance follows Smith’s recent To Be Free residency shows, which mixed career-spanning material with unreleased songs from Hazel Eyes and featured surprise guests including Hozier, Ed Sheeran, Brandi Carlile, SIENNA SPIRO and Kim Petras.
Additional live dates are expected to be announced ahead of the album release.
