Phish To Cross 100-Show Mark During Next MSG Run

There’s something about a Phish show at New York’s Madison Square Garden that even the people who work there can’t quite explain. “There’s an electricity in the air,” one longtime Garden employee says in a new video celebrating the band’s relationship with the arena. “It’s that organized dance, but everyone’s doing their own version [and] just vibing,” says another. “It’s part of this strange universe.”
After 32 years, 99 shows, countless balloons and more wacky themes than anyone can remember, that magic is about to hit triple digits. Phish will return to MSG for a four-night New Year’s run beginning Dec. 30 and culminating with the band’s 100th performance at the venue on Jan. 2. To mark the occasion, the aforementioned new video puts the spotlight on the MSG employees who have spent decades greeting Phish fans, pouring their drinks, selling their merch and watching the odd but joyful ecosystem surrounding the band unfold in real time.

The employees featured in the video aren’t just Garden staff — they’re witnesses to a surprisingly substantial piece of Phish history. One says they’ve worked at the Garden for 33 years and eight months. Another says they’re approaching 29 years. A member of the food and beverage staff says they’ve attended every Phish show at the venue since the band first arrived. That initial show was Dec. 30, 1994, and the 100th will take place exactly 32 years and three days later.
One staffer describes a fan base that can feel as much like part of the performance as the band itself (“they’re interacting with us [and] giving us high fives”), while another reveals he first saw the band live in 1989 and a younger colleague recalls being dazzled by a show-opening “Carini” at his own first Phish show last December.
Phish has celebrated 17 New Year’s Eves at MSG, while its 2017 Baker’s Dozen residency stretched across 13 consecutive shows and featured 237 songs without a repeat. Earlier this summer, the band played five shows with chronological set lists that hewed strictly to the repertoire it would have played during its shows in the early and mid-’90s.
The New Year’s run is currently in the ticket request period through noon ET on Oct. 12. General public tickets go on sale Oct. 16 at noon ET. Beforehand, Phish plays this week in Virginia, Florida and Alabama, and following MSG will stage its 10th annual Riviera Maya destination event on Jan. 27-30 at Moon Palace Cancún. The four-night bash will feature eight Phish sets, along with late-night DJ gigs from James Murphy and Questlove and comedy performances from Fred Armisen, Rory Scovel, Beth Stelling, Ali Macofsky and Phil Hanley.
As previously reported, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and bluegrass star Billy Strings are also joining forces for two special concerts this fall, with both artists backed by the Trey Anastasio Band and all proceeds benefiting Anastasio’s Divided Sky Foundation. The shows are set for Nov. 20-21 at DCU Center Arena in Worcester, Ma., and will benefit Divided Sky, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Anastasio founded to make high-quality addiction care more affordable and accessible.
