Kacey Musgraves Extends ‘Middle’ With New Album

Kacey Musgraves is staying in the in-between a little longer. The artist has announced Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes, a 16-track companion to her May album, arriving Jan. 15 through Lost Highway Records. The collection furthers the first LP’s exploration of the musical and cultural ties between Texas and Mexico, with 11 original songs, five covers and four tracks sung entirely in Spanish.

The first two samplings from Vol. 2, “Weekend In Texas” and her rendition of the Norteño classic “Mi Tesoro,” will be out at midnight Friday (Oct. 23).

More from Spin:

Middle of Nowhere draws its character from Texas dancehall rhythms and classic country, folding in elements of Norteño, bluegrass and pop en route to a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200. “I became so at ease with being in the ‘middle of nowhere’ in many senses and sitting in the un-comfort of the undefined,” she said earlier this year. “I had a lot of time for creative ambling and leaning into myself in different ways — horses, humor, writing with my early collaborators again and living out my very simple, inspired life between Texas, Tennessee and Mexico.”

The new set also includes a recently released Spanish-language version of “Uncertain, TX” featuring Mexican group Intocable, plus “Tú Solo Tú,” recorded live in Mexico City with Mariachi Oro De América, a cover of George Strait’s “All My Exes Live in Texas” with some signature Musgraves flair and a rendition of Freddy Fender’s “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”

Musgraves is winding down her North American arena tour in support of Middle of Nowhere, which rolls into Oakland, Ca., tonight and wraps Oct. 26-27 in Seattle. She’s up for five major nominations at the Nov. 18 CMA Awards, including Album of the Year and Musical Event of the Year for “Horses and Divorces,” her hilarious duet with onetime foe Miranda Lambert.
