Descendents Getting The Z2 Comics Treatment

Punk’s not dead, and neither is the graphic novel. Z2 is turning the nearly five-decade saga of Descendents into DESCENDENTS: MILO GOES TO COMICS, a new illustrated history of the SoCal punk pioneers arriving in 2027, complete with two exclusive new songs and enough band lore to fill a few dozen zines.

Written by Descendents frontman Milo Aukerman, drummer Bill Stevenson and music journalist Annie Zaleski, with illustrations by Ryan Dunlavey and cover art by longtime band visual collaborator Chris Shary, the book traces the friendships, misadventures and creative persistence behind a group that helped lay the groundwork for melodic and pop-tinged punk after forming in Manhattan Beach, Ca., in 1978.

More from Spin:

The deluxe treatment comes with two previously unreleased Descendents tracks, “I Stuck Around” and “Old Power,” pressed on a 7-inch vinyl single. Standard editions and signed Platinum bundles are also planned, with shipping scheduled to begin March 22. Pre-orders are available via Z2 Comics.

“This comic is WAY more entertaining than reading the Wienerschnitzel coupon page,” Aukerman quipped, before promising fans a look at previously unrevealed anecdotes and the “humor, mishaps and pathos” of the band’s ongoing story. Added Z2 VP of Operations Thomas Dreux, “being able to give fans something they simply can’t experience anywhere else makes this book incredibly special, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

For Z2, the project adds another chapter to a catalog that has increasingly blurred the line between music history and sequential art. As previously reported, the publisher revisited Johnny Cash’s largely forgotten 1976 comic, Hello, I’m Johnny Cash, with a 50th anniversary edition, while its collaboration with Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, Farewell to Seasons, explores Seattle’s formative music scene through a graphic novel paired with a companion rock opera.
