Brian Beck, Piotr Orlov Book Collects 80 Musicians’ Favorite Overlooked LPs

What albums do musicians listen to when they’re not listening to the obvious classics? A new book aims to answer that question through recommendations from 80 artists, including Dolly Parton, Brian Eno, Erykah Badu, Billie Eilish, the Roots’ Black Thought, Brittany Howard, Four Tet, Jamie xx, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, Laufey, Philip Glass, Sonny Rollins, Steve Reich and Talking Heads’ Tina Weymouth.
On the Records: 80 Musicians on Beloved and Overlooked Albums, written by music industry veteran Brian Beck and writer and educator Piotr Orlov, arrives Nov. 17 via Clarkson Potter, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Rather than assembling another canon of universally acknowledged classics, On the Records focuses on albums and recordings its contributors believe deserve more attention. The selections range from self-released records and out-of-print albums to recordings that simply failed to find the audience their creators deserved.

The book will be accompanied by a national launch series beginning Nov. 6, featuring radio appearances, DJ sets, book events and in-store appearances. A portion of the authors’ proceeds will benefit Deaf Defy and Deaf Child Worldwide, nonprofits supporting access to hearing technology, sign language, and educational opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
