Björk’s ‘Orkestral’ World Comes Home On Live LP

Björk is giving one of her most intimate recent concert projects a physical life. Björk Orkestral with the Hamrahlíð Choir, recorded at Reykjavík’s Harpa Concert Hall in October 2021, will receive its worldwide physical release Nov. 27 on LP, CD, Blu-ray and DVD.
The performance captures Björk reimagining her catalog through orchestration rather than spectacle, putting her voice, electronics and the contributions of Iceland’s Hamrahlíð Choir at the center. “I am so happy and proud of this concert,” Björk says. “We all put enormous love, energy and time into it.” She describes learning over the years about “the juxtaposition of voices and the electronic,” calling it a philosophical question of “how nature and technology can coexist amicably.”

That balance became especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Harpa performances were conceived and rehearsed during that period, when the stripped-down Orkestral format allowed Björk to revisit older songs she felt she had not yet figured out how to perform live. Unlike the more elaborate visual worlds of the immersive Cornucopia, the Orkestral concerts put the architecture of the music itself front and center.
At the heart of the release is the Hamrahlíð Choir, conducted by its founder Þorgerður Ingólfsdóttir. The relationship between Björk and the choir goes back to Utopia’s “Body Memory” and expanded through the Cornucopia live production, including its original New York run and subsequent European dates. The repertoire draws heavily from the vocal experiments of 2004’s Medúlla, while also reaching across Björk’s catalog.
The collaboration is particularly full circle for Björk, as she herself was once a member of the Hamrahlíð College Choir, which has helped nurture generations of Icelandic musicians. Ingólfsdóttir founded that choir in 1967 and established the Hamrahlíð Choir in 1982. Former members include pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and composers Bára Gísladóttir and Haukur Tómasson.
