Apple’s Fleetwood Mac Doc Finally Due In January

More than two years after it was announced, Apple TV will release the first authorized Fleetwood Mac documentary, The Chain, on Jan. 29. The project was directed by Frank Marshall (The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, The Beach Boys) and will arrive just before the 50th anniversary of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
The film will draw on never-before-soon footage, new interviews with surviving members and archival clips from Christine McVie, who died in 2022. It “will explore how the band’s trials and tribulations, personal resilience and musical dexterity combined to create songs that have not only stood the test of time but are indeed timeless masterpieces,” per a 2024 statement.

“I am fascinated by how this incredible story of enormous musical achievement came about,” says Marshall, who produced in tandem with White Horse Pictures’ Nigel Sinclair, Nicholas Ferrall and Jeanne Elfant Festa, as well as Kennedy/Marshall’s Aly Parker. “Fleetwood Mac somehow managed to merge their often chaotic and almost operatic personal lives into their own tale in real time, which then became legend. This will be a film about the music and the people who created it.”
Fleetwood Mac hasn’t played live since 2019, and on that tour, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham was replaced by the combination of Crowded House’s Neil Finn and former Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. Buckingham toured in 2021-22 but has kept a lower profile in the years since while working on his next solo album, which will be released at some point in 2027.
Next year will also bring solo albums from both Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood. For Nicks, it will be her first since 2014’s 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault, while Fleetwood hasn’t put out an album solely under his own name since 1981’s The Visitor, which featured guest appearances from founding Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green as well as the Beatles’ George Harrison.
